Was driving and the engine started to die, tried downshifting but the engine died completely within a quarter mile. After it was sitting for about 15 minutes it started but stopped after about 10 seconds. Had it towed home. After it sits for a few days I can start it and it will idle fine for awhile
(the longest I left it idle was for about 10-15 minutes) if I then rev up the engine and hold it, it will run for maybe a minute and start to run real rough then die. I thought it was fuel related so I replaced both fuel pumps, the fuel filter and the regulater. Now I'm wondering if it might be something other then fuel related. Anybody have a sugestion? Thank you
I didn't have exactlly the same thing, but when I thought I had a fuel problem folks suggested I check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail. It is a pain on these year trucks but it is supposed to be 40psi. Then check spark, they suggested I hook up a apare spark plug and tie it to a ground on the block then crank it. But it sounds like you get spark. Maybe it just isn't constant spark. Well in my case it turned out to be the wires that connect the engine harness to the coil by the distributor. They had rusted and broke. I don't know if this will help, but here is the link to my old thread:
im not 100% sure of the ignition system in these trucks but in that year didnt they have a distributor? if so that sounds alot more like a pickup coil in the distributor or the distributor itself..
Thank you to all who replied so far. The plugs and wires were replaced a few months back, before the engine started dying. --Yes it does have a distributor. Pickup coil?? I will have to check that. I thought for sure I was dealing with a fuel problem. I didn't realize it could be the distributor or pickup coil.
I dont know if you have fixed this problem yet but i believe it is the relay that controls the fuel pump. it is on the pasanger side firewall. there are 2 of these relays there and 1 is to run the fuel pump and the other is to open the injecters. have someone cycle the key as you feel the relays to find the 2 of them you cna then remove or unplug these relay and bypass then with a jumper wire and if the problem is gone then replace that relay. alot of times moisture gets in tose connections. another word or caustion make sure to look at those plugs beccause ford has alot of problem with corrosion and wire rot in that area.
