Has anyone replaced thier tensioner arm? My brother in-laws came apart on him and were trying to figure out how to finish removing the arm without the spring going flying. + installing the new one. Its a 95 with the 7.3 Thanks for any help. Tim R.
Did mine a couple weeks ago in Kansas City. It was easiest to unbolt the alternator (3 bolts), lay it aside, unbolt the bracket the tensioner attaches to (either 3 or 4 bolts) and take it out to a bench to get the center bolt off. It is a steel bolt into aluminum and was a little difficult to get out. We had to use a small impact loosen - tighten - loosen - tighten and so on until it finally broke loose. Remember on re-installation, never-seize is your friend.
The bolt head was a T-50 Torx if I am not mistaken.
I used a NAPA replacement (on the road and did not have enough time for the dual pulley conversion). It has a longer arm than the original but fits fine with the standard belt. The NAPA tensioner is a little deeper in the body than the original so we had to grind a bit off the head of the bolt that attaches it so the belt would not rub.
Took about an hour with a half hour trying to do it with a ratchet on the engine.
