Not sure what to use...

I have a 99 Ranger 3.0 and I'm stuck between using the castrol mercon V and the valvoline maxlife dextron III/mercon. The truck has 78000 miles on it and its been 42000 since the last transmission drain/refill. Any opinions on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

The Valvoline has a MERCON rating which is the wrong one for your transmission. I'd use the Castrol MERCON V because that is what your transmission requires.

Use the recommended fluid which I think is Mercon V. Mercon is not recomended and should not be used as a replacement for mercon V. You may have shudder problems with the mercon/dexron.
