I have never like the air box design on my '97 Powerstroke. The front of the box is squeezed down to hardly nothing and after you close the hood it looks like to me all the incoming air is being blocked by the hood. The truck a ('97 F250 HD/PSD) with 140k on it seems to run OK but, I think there is room for improvement on the air intake. Is there an open air element for this model? I already checked on a K&N filter and didn't see one. (I am currently using the regular K&N filter that replaces the original filter). Thanks.
I've spent some time looking at various options, and the one I think is best, and the one I've got on my truck, is the TYMAR intake. It's similar in design to the K&N, but offers a few advantages, the filter that is used is considerably bigger, it flows more air, so it creates less restriction, it seals better, so less dust and crud can get sucked into the turbo, and it's a whole lot cheaper. The filter is replaceable, rather than being cleaned, but I don't have a lot of faith that I'm going to get something as clean as a new one, plus the TYMAR paper one flows more air than a new K&N, so it becomes a moot point.
K&N makes a good product, and they are the system of choice in a lot of applications, but this guy specializes in diesels, so his unit is simply better IMHO.
