Hi all, I just ran across a premium 8ft box, 2 fuel doors. It was a take off when new for a towtruck. I wanted it for my 1979 Ford, but the wheel wells sit 7 inches farther back than the box I have now!! This box is off of a camper special, and has the spare tire compartment on the passenger side ahead of the wheel well. I thought there was only the 6ft and 8ft box, has anyone else ran across this.
<!If any one needs a box like this, let me know.>
That's an uncommon box and a real find to someone who needs it, hang onto it. I've seen people here who are looking but getting it to them would be the challenge.
"This box is off of a camper special"
Its off a super camper special and only 3,300 made.
The super camper specials have rear axle moved back 7" to tow a trailer better.
I work at Halifax International Airport (YHZ). Air Canada actually still has a 1975 F350 they use as a Stairs Truck here.. heheh.. It also has an eight foot box with the wheel wells pushed back several inches, and the spare tire compartment on the passenger side. No good to me for my highboy.. but definitly rare
i'm thinking this was a special order vehicle.. no camper special options
I am going to ask them if the truck will go up for auction or be available for purchase, as it is an uncommon unit... very heavy duty.. dana 60 full floater in the back.. and surprisingly for our climate, it is in very good condition..

Which would also make them an excellent tow truck as he indicated the truck was used for.

That's funny. I just flew into a small airport in Madison, WI and they have a 75ish Ford "Stair Truck", too. It looks pretty funny pulling that old thing up to a $10 million private jet.
I a thread on Pirate 4x4.com where a guy reversed his leaf springs (on a Bronco) and it moved the axle back 7-8 inches.
He did it for better departure angle, but it could be usefule for those trying to use SCS beds, or vice versa.
I went and looked at the thread on reversing springs, looks promising.
I'm still curious though, Mil1ion said the camper special and super camper special had 140" wheelbases. Was that a typo? The camper special has got a conventional long box so the difference must be made up somewhere else.
this truck definitly had the 140 wheelbase, and was an F350
the box did have the spare tire setup on the passenger side.
i had the same thought about the old relic pulling up to planes.. thankfully, the beast is still respectable.. heavier than most other trucks up there, including our mid 80's to early 90's f350 water trucks and stairs truck
