Neutral Safety Switch
My 1995 Ranger XLT, 2wd, 4.0, automatic, has decided to stop going in and out of gear. If I wait a while, it'll drop in eventually. (The shift lever)
I looked in my trusty Haynes manual, and it said that the swith is threaded into the tranny somewhere. (It wasn't very specific at all) It showed a switch that looked much like a temp sending unit. When I picked up the part at NAPA, they gave me a big odd shaped piece with a large hole to fil on a shaft of some sort. Not like the Haynes diagram at all.
Which is right? Where is the switch? Anything I should be watching for when I replace it?
Thanks for any help-
Eric
What they gave you sounds like the switch for older Fords that go on the selector shaft. Take it and your Haynes manual back to the parts store and show them the pic of the correct one.
The manual makes it really clear that the switch is delicate and requires a special tool. My guess is that it looks like a double width line wrench. Be carefull!
Haynes fig-8.14 is a close-up and fig-8.12 gives you a better idea of the location.
