Has anyone installed a Flowmaster muffler on the stock pipe?
I want to free up the exhaust and get the heat away from the turbo. Flowmaster #53550 with 3.5 holes is $172 not installed! ouch
I have been told open pipes will be too loud.
has anyone installed a "glass pack" ??
What else can be done without paying for a complete system.
I don't really know the answer to your question but I thought I'd respond to the "too loud" issue. Depending on what your tolerance for noise is, the turbo abates a good deal of the noise. Therefore, just about any muffler would probably be adequate, in my opinion.
I put a dynomax race muffler on mine , all I had to do was cut the stock muffler out , turn the s pipe a little , add a little lenght of pipe and that was it total cost around 60.
too bad your not closer as I have this setup for sale.Im putting a 4" on now
another option is to straight pipe it , but that was too loud for me
i just installed a muffler we have at Midas (where i work)
its called the "ravin" muffler , it is the 77 line and it is a 3 inch in 2.5 x 2 out . makes the truck sound well different .
i love the dual look and had to have it , of course i got a discount on it .
as far as making it run better , well theres little dought to that !
ravin says these out flow the flowmaster .
they dont make a dual outlet system for our trucks , so i just used the one for a 351 . minor mods and it looks and works great .
they do offer a stock replacement muffler for the diesel truck , but it is a single outlet and is 2.5 in , and 2.5 out .
want more onfo , go check a midas shop out . ask for the ravin .
I have a 95 f250 7.3 PSD with just a straight pipe. The only real difference I can tell from the way it was before is a beautiful whistleing whenever you let off the accelerator. But it does get very loud when it is just started on cold mornings for around 15 min. I've been told this is due to the exhaust being held in to heat the cab heater more quickly. But I'm soon going to check on having that disabled.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Jan-02 AT 00:25 AM (EST)]ha! that guy was talking out of his a$$ that is so not true it is a cold start advance when you start the truck cold it advances the timing and that is is what makes it louder . if you realy want a muffler use a flowmaster single chamber or a dynomax and if you are changing your exaust system go to at least a 4" pipe or its not worth it and don't worry about the srait pipe thing it is ok the law only mandates a "backpresure device" and you have a turbo so you are covered strait pipe it!

First, please do not bypass the language filters.
Second, he is correct about the loud cold starts. The PSD has a exhaust back pressure valve that restricts the exhaust flow creating
a loud whistle when cold. Mine kicks in at around 25 degrees and with the straight pipe, makes enough noise to raise the dead.
I have a 97" Powerstroke and it is straight piped and it is not loud at all , she has not cat and mufler si it is a true straight pipe .
It just isn't loud at all and every mufflr shop swears that dualling it out won't ,make it any louder but infact wil make it quiet again maybe with some popping , but doughtful . :-X11
I got mine straight piped with 3.5 inch downpipe and 5 inch exhaust. Best sounding truck out there now.

I put a big block series flowmaster on my 2002 excursion PSD and didnt notice any "loudness" , but did see a slight increase in MPG.
I recently installed a exhaust cut-out right after the downpipe - so i can open it up ad wake the neighbors when i choose too. 5'' exhaust is in the plans ...

Dave,
Where did you buy the exhaust? Was it a kit or did you have it fabricated? I'm sure it sounds awesome, but how loud is it, especially in the cab?
I'm definitely going to go with a new exhaust, probably flowmaster since I've had good performance from their products in the past. The force II kit is a bit expensive, but it should wake the truck up a little.
I have the same exhaust that JOEBOOST is talking about getting...the 5 inch, not the cut out. It is made by Hypermax out of Gilberts,IL. The system is a 3.5 inch downpipe and a 5 inch exhaust. I have no muffler, but it is available with a muffler and the cost does not change either way. The whole kit installed by them was $1000. If you order it and have it shipped it is $171 for the downpipe and $475 for the exhaust. You can check it out at www.hypermaxdiesel.com.
Good luck
And yes no muffler is loud but sounds awesome, honestly when the windows are up its just a little bit louder than stock. It sounds awesome...i always have people looking and saying nice truck!

Dave - I think i asked you this awhile ago - but i cant remember...
Does your truck - with no muffler - have a "flutter" to it or not ???
I am talking about the common noise that people dont like when they run a straightpipe ?? Becasue if that is the case - i think i am going to go with the hypermax with the optional muffler - a wav. file of your truck would be really cool...
JOEBOOST
Yes it does have the flutter. It kinda sounds cool and you get used to it. I think the muffler will only quiet it down some. Not sure. You could call or email hypermax and ask them. The thing of it is that the diesel motors sound like that, just listen to a big rig. Good luck, drop a line if you have any other questions or we can meet up and you can hear it in person, im right in IL.
