I have a 2003 June build date EB 4X4 that has a noticeable clunk when you let off the accelerator, cost then re-apply accelerator. Dealer replaced the diff with a 2004 and it is a little more quite but still there. Any suggestions to fix? Could this be normal? Should I really care that it does this? I looked at the code on the new diff and I believe that is the latest, it had V528E0451009424 and the metal tag had 3.73 9754BLO.
Also I drove it about 25 miles and when I looked under to get the number off of it the diff was fairly warm. As you can see I don't know much about this is it normal for the diff to get warm or hot under driving condition?
I don't think there should be any noticeable noise coming from a stock rearend unless it's malfunctioning. It sounds like another trip back to the dealership is warranted.
Buzzard, is it normal for a diff to get very warm to the touch after driving for a while. As I said it is brand new so I didn't know if that made a difference.
I've never touched a rearend so I don't know for sure, but considering what's going on inside the differential, I have to believe it would be warm. There is a break-in procedure for a new rearend and would hope the shop performed this before giving the vehicle back to you.
I have a very early build '03, built in May of '02. Ever since I drove it off the lot, after I drive for a while, let off the accelerator, then press it again, I hear a clunk. It usually only does this at about 40mph or so.....I think anyway. I hear a similar noise right before I come to a complete stop. It has done this since new so I don't think I have a problem. BTW, mine is a 2wd. I was looking at Edmunds.com in the car discussion section and there were some people there talking about a certain "clunk" in the expedition. With every case, it was found to be normal by the dealerships and Ford. No known problem that might occur after a long period of time. I have gotten used to mine and it hasen't gotten any worse at all and I have had it for almost 1yr and a half. Hope this eases your mind somewhat.
Great thanks for the help. I am OK if it is "normal" and will not cause an issue in the future. The new diff does seem to give me a better response, not as sluggish and it does not whine like the other one did. I am fairly happy now that I have all of the issues taken care of.
