I know that Ford offered a 2.3L 4-cyl with a manual transmission in a regular-cab 4WD Ranger in the mid-90's. The equivalent Mazda B-Series could be had this way as well. Here are my questions:
1) Did they ever offer that in a SuperCab?
2) If you have one of these, how is the power?
3) What have you towed with it?
I don't care at all about drag racing, I just want to be able to cruise on the highway at 75 with a headwind. I've driven my brother's '88 with the 2.0L and you can't keep it in overdrive.
I don't care about automatics--I would only buy a manual. I would expect an automatic in this configuration to be anemic. Although, if you tow a boat with your 4-cyl auto, I'd be interested in your findings.
I don't care about the 4.0 or the 3.0. I've driven both and I know their strengths and weaknesses. The equipment I've mentioned is harder to find and I've not been able to drive one yet.
Thanks for your input and for this site in general.
I have never seen a 4-cylinder 4x4. Maybe someone else here has and can provide some info. I'm assuming that if they exist they were trucks that were specially ordered that way?
Wow, i'd buy that right now, cause thats probably the only one of those out there right now. I never even thought they made a 4x4 with a 4 banger in it. I imagine that there are only a select few of those out there
Well, I'm not quite so sure about the very early 90's but they did offer it in the 80's. When I bought new in 94, the least you could get was the 3.0. I also know that Ford quit offering the 4x4 with the 3.0 a few years ago (ie, 4.0 only).
Many years ago, a buddy of mine had an 86 with the 4 cyl and 4x4. It did, ummmmmmm, ok around town. Hauling a load of firewood and trying to maintain 65 was not possible with a headwind, not to mention hills. And yes, it was a supercab. It would get you anywhere you needed to go, but you just had to be willing to tolerate the lack of power was all.

Thanks for the info, Cowboy. I didn't know you could get one in a SuperCab back in the '80's. I'll have to keep my eye out. I know you can still get a new regular cab 4x4 with a 4-cyl--it's the new 2.5L four--but you can't get it in a SuperCab. I talked to both a Ford and Mazda dealer and they told me the same thing.
a guy over on rough rangers has a 94 4x4 reg cab 4 banger. i saw one at the local used dealer here too. i thought, no way, and we popped the hood and it was a 4 banger.
So I guess they did make a few still in 94 but I'm almost 100% sure you can not get a 4cyl 2004 4X4. I just looked on the ford website. When you select 4X4 with any package level package you get the 3.0 or the 4.0.
I'd expect that someone personally put the 4 banger in the 94 unless perhaps the truck came from another country. I'll guarantee that in 94 it was V6 only in the US. Check out an owners manual maybe for the year(s) in question.
Okay, I called a local dealer, and I'll retract the 2004 having a 4-cylinder available in a 4x4. The guys at the Chicago Auto Show told me it was, but they must have been mistaken.
The thread is still valid, however, since they did offer it from 1993-1996. There are 21 of them out on autotrader.com (about 5% of the total number of 1993-1996 Rangers available out there), so I'm thinking it was a factory option.
Now that I look, one of the autotrader trucks is within 30 miles of my house, so I might as well run down and take it for a spin.
Any stories from current owners of this beast are still welcome.
I have a '94 2.3L 4Cyl 2WD. I wouldn't recommend a 4WD 4-Banger to anyone. Mine hardly has enough Umph to drive through the Ozarks at a Constant 70-75 Mph, I could only imagine trying to spin 4 tires, that oughta have take a toll on the already weak gerbils they have turning the crank!
4wd 4-cylinders only came in reg cab (sb or lwb choices) up until 96, if carpoint.com led me right and with MANUAL tranny only. Base of the base, other than 4wd option, I think.
I've heard that they aren't bad considering the extra weight. I guess they are geared well. I don't have a 4x4, but my 2wd 2.3L S-cab does a lot better getting up than I thought it would when I bought it.
I guess not making a S-cab 2.3L 4wd was Ford's way of trying to grab more money out of your wallet and go for the 3.slow or 4.0 and the 4wd option.
Maybe with gas prices going up, we'll see something like Toyota has with a 2.7L 4wd truck. The Ford v6s just don't do it for me.....I guess I'll settle for a locking rear when I get the cahnce.
