Diesel

I did a search of the forum and did not come up with a direct answer. Has any one attampted a swap to a diesel engine? I would love a small diesel in my 99f150 supercab. Ford was going to install a 4.5lV6 but dropped it. I was wondering about a 4cyl. cummins.

WHY? If it's fuel price, consider in the cost of the engine, time involved in the swap, the extra expence to get it accomplished, you could buy a lot of gas. Any other reason?

I would like the diesel but do not need a 3/4 or larger ton truck. I have a use for the existing gas engine in the truck. If Ford would build one I would be buying now.

No real experience in this, but I believe the F-250s share many similar components as the F-150s, so you might be able to swap in a 6.0.

But on the other side, any engine swap would be very expensive, time consuming, and it would probably be easier to just buy a new truck.

You are right eaiser to buy new truck. No new 1/2 tons out that offer diesel.. 6.0 V8 would be to big and heavy, I do not know how much it weighs but the Cummins 5.9 is 970lbs. The Ford 5.4V8 weighs about 540lbs. Cummis said that the 3.9 L 4cyl is about 600lbs. This is the engine I would be interested in unless I could get a International 4.5L V6 Powerstroke that Ford abandoned.

I would wait and see what happens with light duty diesels within the next few years. Ford cancelled the use of the 4.5L V-6 Diesel in the F-150, but there have been numerous articles stating that they still want to be the first to have a diesel in their half-ton truck. Detroit Diesel, Cummins, and I think even John Deere were mentioned as possible suppliers. Therefore, I wouldn't go to the trouble of trying to install one when by 2006 or 2007 there may be one optional in the new trucks. I think everyone is waiting on low sulpher diesel to make their move.
