You said your mileage was "Poor".. What kind of numbers?? Some folks think 14 MPG is "poor".. I'm sure that Tim was not saying your writing was poor...LOL
If you think 11 MPG towing is poor, try the same tow with a gasser. All things being equal, you are probably getting about 3 MPG more with your diesel than the gasser would. I know this is my experience going from a 2002 V-10 Excursion to a 2004 6.0L Excursion. I kick myself for not switching to diesel sooner. Last summer, I spent over $700 in gas towing around the southern states and getting an average of 8 MPG. Could have saved some dollars with diesel as it was always cheaper to buy and I would have gotten more MPG.
I have an '03 dually with 3.73 ratio that I use to haul my #4000 camper and #4000 boat. I like to keep it around 60 but around 58, it drops into overdrive(approx. 1750rpm). I'm in tow/haul and my question is, even though it has plenty of power, is this lugging it to where my exaust temps are getting high? No pyro so maybe you guys with them might clue me in. If I keep it under 58, the rpms are a little over 2000. Thanks for any advice.
First off, with the small amount of weight you are hauling, you shouldn't need to use the T/H mode unless you are traveling in pretty steep terrain. Secondly, are you sure about that rear end ratio?? It was my understanding that the 03 dually only came with 4.10's (could be wrong, but that was my understanding) I know that's what I have in mine. Lastly, OD does work in T/H mode and you can drive it normally in that mode if you want to. T/H is supposed to hold each gear longer on the upshifts and help with grade braking.
