When I bought this '97 PSD a few weeks back they dealer (not Ford) found that the right rear axle seal was leaking and had soaked the brake pads, etc. So they replaced the seal and both sets of rear brake pads. Now roughly 3 weeks later it is leaking again!
Anyone have any input as to potential causes, is there something besides the seal that should be looked at?
Check to see it the ventilation tube is plugged up. It's about a half inch in diameter and up top on the drivers side of the pumpkin. If so, when you build a little heat up in the differential, the pressure will rise and it can takeout the seals. When the shop replaced the seals, they should have checked for this.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Aug-02 AT 03:40 PM (EST)]What alanscott described is most likely your problem.
However, I have seen this before; Did the shop check/replace the bearings too?
If your truck has a lot of miles, they may have replaced a bearing or two. They might have put the wrong bearing in it. In other words, a bearing may fit the race, but may be too big for the spindle, and in this case the bearing wobbles around on the spindle and knocks the seal out.
Just something to consider, albeit rare.
On Edit: Hopefully this shop used the proper seal, and/or installation procedures for it! Please tell me they didn't beat it in with a block of wood!
Thanks! I'll be sure to ask both questions when I take it back in.
I purchased if from a Dodge dealer, they did the work. I'll have to take a look to see if I see any wood blocks laying around
I'd like to get more than a couple hundred miles out of a the seals.
Well I dropped it off this morning to have the work done, well see what they come up with. He mentioned something about possibly needing a quick sleeve if there was a groove worn in the seat ...
