Anyone running this t-stat in their truck? I have done quite a bit to the engine in the way of performance mods.
I just finished installing the 160* t-stat and I really don't understand why it has made the truck run smoother. I had a slight bit of pinging when going up hill, now just smooth acceleration.
Could it be different season gas?
I'm not sure why it would run smoother, but a cooler engine is less likely to ping. I'm not exactly sure why; maybe someone here can explain...
I haven't tried Hypertech since the dissappointing results I experienced with them in the past, but they recommended running a cooler stat and (of course) higher octane fuel - those two things allow more spark advance without detonation. There's also water injection, cool cans, etc., but I digress.
The only problem with the 160 Tstat is keeping the engine cold enough to stay in cold start mode more often thus using more fuel.... Not always but it could create problems for you. Generally a very minor potential for improvement vs issues... I'd skip it and go for more proven methods of HP improvement. My .02
I have installed a 165 thermostat in my v-10. After installing the headers, MAFS and throttle body, it was running lean. The lower temp stat makes the engine controls think it's cooler operating temperatures and feeds it slightly more gas. Just enough to get the job done. I have no problems with winter driving or fuel mileage going down. Just more power.
Ok so using the electric fans I have I could raise the "on" temp a bit higher in the summer and prevent this waste of fuel.
Well now that I think about it, I have not had any codes for a lean condition when driving. The only code that has recently started popping up is "EGR insufficent flow".
