Basically what it comes down to is that your are not "losing" any HP or torque. You are simply moving the torque/power curve relative to your speed.

A truck that has 29" tires and 3.50 gears will have "nearly" the same performance as a truck that has 44" tires and 5.31 gears.

The reason I say "nearly" is that the added rotating mass of the 44" tires does reduce the power output. That is why lightening flywheels and using alloy driveshafts helps free up the force availible at the pavement.

The reason you "feel" a reduction in power with larger tires is that you move your operating RPM's down the power curve........and in some cases out of the power band of the engine, which results in very poor performance and mileage.

The main goal of gearing is to translate the power of the engine at it's optimum RPM to a usefull speed through gear reduction.

Digging up an oldie! Strapped 38's on my truck that has always been on 44's. 428 FE opened up like a rocket and the truck is a screamer! Lots of fun

5:13's. I'm looking into a new set of 44's soon. I wonder how a set of really low 7.17's would work with them??? I was just surprised how much more power I gained by throwing on the temporary 38 SX's.

Well I guess anyone should have been able to tell you that.

That's one reason I like lowest gears possible.

I've ran 5.13s with 35s....

33s with 4.88s.

73,
I have given you hell from the day you strolled into the offroad forum but deep down I thought you knew what you were talking about. After your last few post I'm realizing I was wrong which does not happen often

Please have yourself checked for a tumor

Obviously anyone knows going to a smaller tire your motor works less and feels like power is gained. I'm just surprised how much I gained over changing to a 6" smaller tire that's all

*FLIPOFF*

Sorry if my topics aren't about painting pink engine blocks.

You must have a tumor if you think I need this forum to answer any question above or beyond "what color to paint my motor" The color was completely left up to the guys here because most of them know I change colors every rebuild. The difference is I have the bawls to rock a pink motor and be happy about it because the internals speak for themself.

The only other questions I've asked in the last 7-8 years was about my traction bar tube size and motor plate coating preference. - neither of which got a satisfactory answer or any reply at all.

i used to drop from 38.5's to 265's every winter. granted i had 3.55 gears, but i couldn't use granny 1st in the zf on 265's. and honestly i liked it better w/38.5's. maybe it was just that i was used to my shift points w/38.5's v.s. the tiny tires, but it felt more responsive. then again a gas zf is kind of wide ratio and 1-4 worked great with the 38.5's and 40's. 5th was good for 80mph highway driving, but i rarely drive that fast.

comparitively speaking iirc, the math on 3.55's with 38.5's v.s factory 265's stated 4.88's would've been a mathematical match. honestly i should've been looking at 5.13's to get closer to a stock truck with 4.10's.......but my dumb *** bought some 4.56's and never installed them. granted back then the only person i had to ask about gear ratios was my dad, who's only experience was with muscle cars, so to him when i asked about 4.88's he was like that's crazy low, i wouldn't go lower than 4,56's.....then i put on my big boy panties and read up and learnded me some shyte.

O I see now. You sit on a high horse not willing to ever ask a question as you are the best and you know all. This thread wasn't a question by the way anyways , just more of a statement.
I couldn't care less what you think on my capabilities as I can build, fab, paint, set axles ,build engines ,electrical to w/e. I think I can do a little of everything but ill never be as good as you but this is my hobby not my life.
I do like to shoot the chit sometimes on different topics to see what others think though.
