[updated:LAST EDITED ON 31-Aug-02 AT 11:24 AM (EST)]We have a 1985 F-350 with a 6.9L diesel, and the injector pump was replaced not too long ago. Well to make a long story short, the engine is now running very rich. The new pump was reset to the specs of the old worn out pump. Does anybody have any idea on how we can get this unit to quit running so darned rich? The mileage has gone downhill since replacing the pump, and we need to get this fixed.
In all likelihood, who ever set the pump up, despite what they may say, gave it too much fuel.
The pump gear is attached with 3 bolts and a dowell. Turn the engine over until the dowell is at exactly 12 o'clock. As you are facing the front of the vehicle there is a triangular shaped access cover on the left side of the pump held on with 2 screws. Remove that plate and insert a 1/8 inch allen wrench and turn it one flat of the wrench (1/6 of a turn) counter clockwise. A little goes a long way so don't turn it too much. Run the truck for a while and see how you like it. You may want to either turn it back another one half flat or you may find that you have already gone too far and want to turn it up a half flat. Just keep playing with it until you get it where you want it.
