I need some help, I was given an 1972 F250 Custom yes given! anyway the engine won't pass emissions so I will have to rebuild which i've never done. the motor is a 360 with a t-18 tranny. I guess my question is what should I use as far as cam, cylinder heads (stock or ?) intake manifold, carb, timing gears, valves, distributor and any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. The truck would be used as a daily driver/ work truck and am looking for good fuel mileage and good performance. thx.
I would use just stock replacement conponents. Keep the heads you have and put an RV cam in it. If upgrading to a 4bbl carb get an Edel Performer manifold. It will save you 50lbs. The iron manifold is HEAVY!
To me the most important thing to do is replace the stock exhaust manifolds. They don't breath worth a hoot. Get some headers.
Sadly, you can forget about getting any good mileage with the truck. If yer lucky you might get 12-14mpg hiway.
Are you to the point where it won't pass emission because it smokes too bad? What part of the test will in not pass? Have you tried to fix and re-test? I have been able to salvage some non-passers by giving them a good tune with a couple of additives and vacuum line fixes.
How much do you want to spend for the rebuild and how long do you have?
i guess i will spend about 2-3 grand when it's all done. I have nothing but time I am driving the old lady's suv for now I think if i do it right and in sections I will take about a year wish i had more money but bills are killing me right now so I will do what i can I would like some help on the parts that I use I want to use only quality parts and to do this right, it won't be a frame up restore but a daily driver as I do love Ford Trucks!
