Unhappy New Carb installed

I just bought a remanufactured carb for my 79 f 100 302 engine..I has made a difference while running however..I know it needs some adjusting..Is it possible to adjust this your self without having to go and hire someone to do this? labor rate is 55-75 bucks an hour..yikes..I have a Haynes manual but it recomends a tachometer... sigh..sounds like a expensive tool and I wouldnt even know how to use it anyway..maybe I am better off hiring someone to do this..I know where the idle screw is and I saw another screw below the fuel intake.. I also have plugged the extra ports that are not in use...I have already replaced the filters, plugs, wires, cap and rotor but the carb just seems to run rough..any suggestions?

You can try backing out both mixture screws about 1/4" at a time to see if it smooths out. These screws are found on the front of the carb if I remember. If it runs rougher turn them in and see if it gets any better. (out=counterclockwise, in=clockwise) If this doesn't work you might have a vacuum leak someplace, like the carb gasket.

As far as a tach is concerned what is expensive to you? I would rather use a vacuum gauge for this, when it is hooked up and running adjust the screws until you obtain the highest vacuum reading.
