I installed an edelbrock intake on my 360 about three months ago.Last
week I noticed the left side exhaust smoking white. So I retorqued the intake
bolts ,they took almost a full turn. After I did this I took it out for a ride and
she smoked like mad.I pulled it into the garage and coolant was running out of the left side muffler. Pulled the plugs on that side and the number 8
cylinder was full of coolant. The intake gasket failed .I used a fel-pro 1247
and high tack. Can anybody suggest a better gasket and gasket sealer?
This truck is not a race truck but a daily driver.Am I better off going with
a production gasket?
Which intake? The Fel-Pro 1247 is used probably more than any other. I've had no problems with that gasket.
I see 2 possible problems, the intake moved around when you were installing it (sometimes a result of using those cork end gaskets, they like to move). Or, it was not torqued down enough. I don't think the "reccomended" torque specs are realistic, unless everything comes together perfect.
You need to RETORQUE the intake several times to get a good seal. The aluminum seems to "move around" after the initial torque. Torque the intake and then wait 15-20 minutes and torque it again. Repeat until the bolts don't move at retorque.(Took about 8 trips around the bolts on aluminum intake 351W) I don't think you can get better gasket/sealer combo.
Most guys on the FordFE site think the 1247's stink, and I agree. They "squished" out of the intake ports on my 410 really bad, even with conscientious torquing and re-torquing, and I was especially careful after problems the first time, even used PermaCinch! I had them fail three times. I'm now using FelPro's conventional gasket which has the steel mesh embedded, and no more problems. I've seen that some people recommend the Mr. Gasket #202 as a good alternative too, JFWIW. Steve
Thank's for the info.Does anyone know why Edelbrock specifies to only use the Fel-pro 1247 gaskets and nothing else?If they cant hold torque
then what good are they.Don't get me wrong I enjoy working on my truck.
But I don't want to tear it apart every other month to replace gaskets.
By the way the manifold is a perfomer 390.

You should not have to check manifold bolts every week.By the way the manifold is a performer 390.
