Hey all,
It's time.
I'mjust not a red truck/red car/red anything guy, and I have wanted to get out of my shiny red, excellent condition 99 XLT Sport for a while. After looking at trading it in for another 99, but in black or silver, I relize it doesn't make sense because I am the single owner of mine, I'd be buying someone eles's headache, AND the amount I would pay a dealer on top of my trade is more than it would cost to just paint mine. So I am.
Earl Schreib's website looks like they will paint your car cheap, around $400.00/6 yr warranty. That is amazing. Have't gotten a Maaco estimate yet. Hope it will be close to $400 or $500. Is that realistic for a good job? (
My ranger is red and I want it black or charcoal grey, maybe a dark blue.
I'll want to resell the truck in a couple years
Any tips/recommendations/warnings about getting a paint job somewhere?
Thanks!
In auto painting, you will most of the time get what you pay for. A 600 buck paint job put on now, could bite you when you trade or sell in 3 years. A good reputable shop will give you a price for a total color change with them using urethanes, in a range of 1800 to 3000 dollars. Price will vary because of shop reputation / skill, the color and quality of product you select, and the condition of your vehicle as to how much prep/repair will be needed. So, if you choose the cheaper job, sell it quick while it is still fresh. To me, it really doesnt make since to put 2k + in a paint job, then hope you can recoup the cost on a resale, risky investment. all jmo, good luck

Got a question for ya?
You say your not a red type of person but you are the single owner of your red truck. You do not like the red paint that came on your brand new truck from the dealership. Why did you buy a brand new red truck?
I understand that if it was purchased in the following model year where the dealer is trying to get rid of it badly off the showroom floor but negotiations could have been made with the dealer to have that red truck repainted to a color of your choice.
But anyway Greg 79 f150 is absolutly correct. If you use one of those fly by night for a couple hundred buck paint shops it is best to get rid of your truck now while the paint is still shiney & new. If you wait a year or two your $400.00 paint job will show & most likely decrease the value of the truck.
Color changes are no different than repainting the same color, as far as prep etc. of the outer sheetmetal. What makes them difficult is all the nooks and crannies that are still going to be visible. The firewall, inner fenders, tailgate jambs, the area between the cab & bed. Chances are Schieb or Macco are going to charge a lot extra to detail all that. Without a lot of tedious work, the fact that the color has been changed will be fairly obvious in a few years when you go to sell it, and may reduce it's value.
If you were planning on keeping it for life, I'd say go for it. But if you're planning on selling it in a couple of years, I think I'd leave er the same color.
Thanks for the feedback. I do want to get rid of the truck soon, and can't decide if I should put in money for a paint job or put in money on top of the trade in value. If I can get 10k or 11k for the truck on trade in, since it is great shape and only 42k miles, with another thousand I could upgrade myself to a BLACK 2000 or 2001.
I really like the front black grills on the 2001s and up - Don't know if they are only on the Edge's though.
I have bought and traded many vehicles in the last 32 years and I will just add this. Whenever I looked at a prospective truck to buy, I leaned toward purchasing the truck with the original factory paint job on it, with whatever nicks and scratches it had, rather than the newly painted one. One never knows what that new paint has hidden under, and was the new paint job done to last 10 years or done for a quick sell ?? hmmm, my two cents is leave the factory paint, buff/wax it, detail it to the max, and trade it before another year rolls over on it, and dont let it hit 50 k miles, the trade in value will drop even more when it turns 50K miles. good luck to you
