Hey guys, i got a problem. Hopefully somebody can give me some pointers. I have an 89 b2 4x4 xlt, 2.9l 5 spd. my brake lights dont work at all. My flashers dont work, my horn doesnt work. My tailights come on, turn signals work, just not brakes or flashers. I have a crappy repair manual that has a tiny wiring diagram. From what i can tell the flashers and brakes are on the same circuit. Anyway, i checked all fuses, replaced the bulbs in case one of the elements was burned out, and checked the wires on the top of the pedal to make sure they were still connected. The wiring diagram in the book shows a "multi function switch" that has all the lights connected to it and i think this might be where my problem is. So... does anyone know where this switch is, or do you have any other suggestions? PepBoys was going to charge me $70 just to look at it so im really desperate for some help. Any would be greatly appreciated. Thanx fellas.
Give the brake lite switch a swap out.Its relatively cheap, I paid 9 bucks for mine. Its on the brake pedal arm and all you need to do is to take out a cotter pin to change it.As for the horn, it probably got water in it one too many times and it seized up. Hit a wrecking yard and grab one for cheap. Seems the cheapest way to go,if that don't work, then head to get it checked out. It's usually something small causing the problems.
thanx for the advise... it gave me an idea. I just ran a new wire right from the starter relay where the negative cable attaches and went straight to the switch.. then i ran a new wire from the switch all the way back to the lights. They work now. thats whats important. As for the horn.. it stopped working the day i got it, then started working again out of nowhere. The cruise control also worked. Then about a week after that they both stopped. Then a few months ago they started working again. And now for about a week they both dont work again. So.. who knows where the short is.
If yours is the same as my 87 it's wired from the fuse to the horn relay then thru a "voltage supply brush" (some have a clock spring instead) & then to the horn & cruise control switches on the steering wheel. If horn & cruise quit working together might be a flaky horn relay or problem with the voltage supply brush or clockspring.
