Hey fellas, was wondering about some engines.
I am looking for a 96-00 ranger SWB 2wd. I am wondering on what all engines were avalible for these years and I am also going for one with the 5spd. standard.
What are some good years too go for and nice power?
Also, I know in the past the 2.3L 4-banger had oiling problems and was wondering if mazda fixed that little bug in that series of engines?
Thanx.

Your choices are 2.3 liter 4 cyl (112 HP), 3.0 liter V6 (150 HP) or 4.0 V6 (160 HP--but a lot more torque than the 3.0).
3.0 and 4.0 engines use a lot of gas, the 2.3 is fairly good on gas but is underpowered. It really depends what you plan to use it for, if you are going to be hauling heavy loads and driving on the interstate, go with the 4.0, if you are just driving around the city get the 2.3. Most of the regular cab SWB 2wd models came with the 2.3 liter 4 cyl and 5 speed manual. The manual transmission is pretty easy to find in any of the model configurations.
Look at www.carpoint.msn.com www.autotrader.comwww.cars.com
Well, I am looking for truck I like w/ the 2.3L cause I like MPGs and the one I'm driving now is pretty quick and pulls a loaded down 14' trailor nicely.
Do the rangers still use the mazda 5spd trannys or do the newer ones have different makes?
You won't find a 2.3L for the 2000 year. I have a 2000 2.5L (119 hp) 5 speed. I think the 2.3L dissappeared for about 3 years and they made only the 2.5L. Anyone know what years they made the 2.5L or what the story was behind this?
Oh, and mine has the M5OD mazda transmission and I get about 27 mph if I keep her in tip top tune.... and yes new plugs are needed about every 40K miles.
So, what is the differences in the 2.3L and the 2.5L? Are they the same block just bored more?
Will a header for a 2.3L fit a 2.5L?
My first mod when I get a ranger will probly be header, 2-1/2" pipes through a high flow cat and a 40 series flowmaster.
Stroked. More torque. The block & heads are the same, so a header should fit. From what I understand, the later models had a header from the factory .. not the cast iron beast originally installed, but a tube-type.. or so they tell me.
