Hood liner? Is it needed?

In January I installed a FatMat hood liner in my 01 f150. Last Friday I removed it because it was falling off and causing excessive heat in the engine compartment.

I was going to put the original back on but haven't done it yet- it's way too nice outside.

Will there be any negative impact if I leave the liner off? I've heard engine heat can cause paint problems but I can't imagine it's worse than when the dark blue truck sits outside on a 100 degree day.

Thanks
Tim

Good question. My blue '97 is missing the hood liner also.

I think the insulation on the hood is more for noise suppression than anything else. Lots of trucks dont have it. I wouldn't worry about it.

I think the lightings exclude the hood liner for less weight, so it couldn't be that much of a concern.

Ford didn't bother putting a hood liner on the Expedition until 1999. I haven't seen any 1997-98 models with fried hoods.

Isn't it a fire resistant material so if there is a fire under the hood, the plastic retainers melt and it falls to help smother out the fire? 100 degree sun is not as hard on the paint as the 200 degrees plus that comes from under the hood. It will help keep the paint from fading over the years.

Thanks for the responses. I'll put the stock liner back in a day or two. I tried the fatmat for noise suppression in the first place. It worked well in the rest of the truck.
