I have a '91 ford ranger xlt the gas/odometer.and speedometer doesn't work any ideas i thought amybe it had been unhooked but i don't know how to check this?? all other gauges work fine and the truck runs great. Any ideas are greatly appreciated... thanx
bpray - If both odometer and speedometer are not working then you may want to start with the easiest place. Slide under the truck on the driver's side and locate the speedocable that goes to the trans, around the tail end up top. There should be 1 bolt that holds it in with a U shaped clip. If you take it out make sure it doesn't look damaged. It should be just a plastic gear that slides inside the case. This is much easier than going under the dash first. If you don't find anything under the truck then try to trace the cable back to the inside. Your speedo should still be cable operated so that is the most obvious cause. I don't know when Ford changed to an electirc speedo, but either way you should check where it connects to the trans. I don't have an electic speedo but I would check fuses after that.
As for your gas gauge issue..... The float in the tank is usually damaged and fills with fuel, so it sinks to the bottom and reads empty. There is a handfull of wires on top of the back of the gas tank that could be broken, but usually the pump wouldn't work either. These two posts might help.
