The biggest problem with chickens is dogs...we lost 27 one night to dogs, used to sell a lot of eggs to health food stores (wanted fertile eggs) got into rabbitts too but, that is another story. Just remember there is no such thing as a "part-time" farmer, just another full-time job.... Good luck, George
Chickens are really easy to keep.. turkeys on the other hand, are loud, noisy, stupid, and destructive..
Oh yeah, and if you get a rooster, make sure you only have one or they will become very aggressive and kill eachother.
I have ckickens that free range. Don't let them near your freshly sprouted crops they will eat just about anything they can catch. Its fun to watch them catch a mouse and chase each other around with it.
A fresh free range egg taste much better than store bought.
I had a big tom turkey once, he was very tame, quiet, and followed me around the yard.
Chickens are easy - lots of feed suppliers and they will munch down table scraps. As mentioned above predators are the biggest problem. A cat will cause more odor and damage to the surroundings then a chicken. Just don't let anyone talk you into pigs - they will drive the average person insane with their destructive rooting and the only fences they pay attention to are electrified or panels that are set on concrete.
"A cat will cause more odor and damage to the surroundings than a chicken"
having both i'd say the chickens do more. but my three cats are too busy being attacked and chased by the chickens to do much damage. the chickens will walk up to the cats face and stare them down, if they don't back away they get pecked between the eyes.
My cousin had pigs once, he had to move the pen near 100 times when he had them. only had 3, but they ripped up all the grnd. He was more than happy to dispatch them. They were tasty though, good bacon and ham.
I have never had a Cat,that was a Chicken, but I did have one that was a Pig,and man could he eat like a Horse,ok dont Dog me,and try to get my Goat,I will only Duck, cause I am as stubborn as a Mule, and I`m not Lion,ok,I`ll quit,I cant Bear it,anybody else want to take a Gander at it.
