As some of you know i just got a 87 F150 4x4 with a 300 and auto.My problems are at take off it bogs down for a second. No skip at speed,no bogging off idle. The other problem is at idle there is a skip.It will run as smooth a baby butt(some times I have to rev it to make sure it is still running) but it has a intermittant skip or bobble.Got a new O2 sensor I want to put on but can't get the old one off but will try again tomorrow,Replaced the fuel filter and it was full of chunkys when I drained it.The engine only has around 10K on it if that is any help.
When you replace the O2 sensor, you might want to have a tap handy for the threads. Mine still had a Ford part number on it and the truck went 170K before it threw a code for it, so when I removed it the threads were pretty bad and the new one wouldn't go in until I ran a tap through there. I don't remember what size it was though; it was my Dad's as I was on my way back from a long trip and had stopped by there to see him.
Dropping a cylinder once in a while is not uncommon, and EFI Fords are notorious for a hesitation of idle. The hesitation is so common that Casper's Electronics developed a plug in module for the TPS to improve the off idle response. I don't know if it works or not, but it is out there.
The O2 thread is the same as an 18mm spark plug, so a plug thread chaser will clean them up.
thanks guys.Still can't get the dern O2 sensor loose. Is there anywhere I can get a new Y pipe?Mine looks like it was bent(doesn't line up with one manifold-Good ol exhaust leak tick) and is about rusted out.Might as well just replace it along with the O2 Sensor. Will also give me a reason to have a new exhaust system installed.Everything is Factory under there by the looks(Muffler still has skid plate thingy) and is really starting to show age.Heck,300K on the truck and looks like everything has survived without replacement other than teh engine(?!?!)
Ok,here is what I have done so far.I had the exhaust replaced(kept the Y pipe thingy though) and now have a nice shinny 2 1/2" pipe from the Y pipe to a Flowmaster Series 40 muffler then back to the stock exit location.I had the guy torch the O2 sensor and attempt to turn it a little.Well,it worked,he broke it loose. So I get home and finish removing the thing and installed the new one.The one that was removed was a Ford....276K and didn't throw a code....not bad, figured I would replace it before it did though.I didn't help anything.Still have the bobble at idle and bad bogging but I did notice it was running much better off idle.Better get up and go after it was moving.I need to check the plugs next weekend and might as well go ahead and replace the wires and plugs while I am at it.The wires are from 2 sets since 3 are straight boot and 3 are low angle boots.Got another question,Do crate engines come with the injectors or do you just transfer the originals(or purchase new ones) to the new engine?Maybe I have a bad injector or two.I know all the stuff bolted to the top didn't come with the crate engine so maybe I have found "a" problem.
