Hey jd..

I have all my stuff ready to install, "but" I have to take it back for some warranty work.. Mine is going pre-turbo for sure.. It just seems to me that if/when "riding the fence" as far as EGT's, I want to know for absolutely sure where the temps are, if even only in 65HP tune.. I probably won't even come close to the dreaded red zone, but I GOTTA KNOW!!
I'm putting mine in "one" of three places.. Either, in the exhaust manifold elbow, close to the flange (left side) bottom/side of the manifold so when I drill (graduate small to large bits) any chips will/should fall down and out.. And, it's a reasonably easy area to access, and wire.. Others put them topside.. I was looking anywhere for a spot on the manifold that had a thicker "boss" to drill, but wanted it towards the exit for a combined sampling.. I also checked the cost of a replacement manifold, should I, OR Ford, have a need to replace it..Not too bad.. OR, I'll put it 1" or so just out of the manifold into the exaust pipe after removing some insulation..And lastly, maybe at the "Y" pipe connection on the turbo..large pipe, and fairly easy access..I have both style probes, clamp on, and threaded..Just have to decide.. The threaded probe I have, is a fixed position, non adjustable, so I'm sort of limited as to where it will go by depth.. It "looks" though like I could put it anywhere, BUT check before drilling, because the manifolds are wider, than thicker.. Wish Ford would get all their "improvements" done so I can power the Predator back up!!

Pre-turbo is the only way to get an accurate reading. Post-turbo will help you make an educated guess, but that's about it. The best location is in the exhaust manifold. Remove the manifold before you start drilling.

I put mine in the drivers side exaust manifold. I drilled straight up from the bottom. Wal-mart sells attatchments for shop vacs that fit into the probe hole. You can also use a small allen key attatched to a magnet to reach inside and retrieve the metal shavings. The remainder of the shavings will not hurt the turbo on the exaust side it is a hardened metal for high heat application unlike the inlet side. It is very easy to drill just go slow with the tap is is easy to ruin the threads. hopt this helps Jerry.

JD, I'm in a similiar situation as you. Read with interest the replies. Does anyone have any pics of your probe installations? Just curious.

Before I intalled mine I was asking the same question. But once I crawled under and had a look at the elbow just before the flange, it seemed, to me, to be the obvious choice. I then removed the L F wheel and the inner fender. Then to the manifold. I'm sure it could have be done alone, but having a buddy there sure made it easier. Then drilled and tapped at the elbow and rinsed it out with the hose.
The next day someone told me about a shop around here that does it with the manifold installed and prior to startup, removes the exhaust prior to the turbo and shop-vac's it that way. I still feel better knowing that I took it off and am damn sure there was nothing left in there to mess up the turbo.

roadster,
How long did your install take? I was planning on removing the manifold also for my install.

Hard to say. That day I started with the manifold as I knew it would be the hardest. Then did the Juice with Attitude. Then did a turbo back exhaust. Maybe it took 3 hrs. But I took the manifold to my buddies shop for drilling and tapping as he had the tools that I didn't.

Sorry I can't be more precise.

3 hours sounds like a good estimate, where there any gaskets or metal seal rings you had to replace?

Nagative on the seals and gaskets, which suprised me too. There is a piece of plumbing on the top closer to the radiator side that did give me a bit of a fit to re-install. Out of say 12 bolts in all, 3 realy stink primarily the flange bolts.
