I'm considering using Durabak (roll-on bedliner, http://www.durabak.com/) as an undercoating and coating my firewall and inner fenders.
I was cautioned by the distributor that the product is stable up to 250 degrees. I know that catalytic converters can get hot, however, my truck does not have any. My question is about headers and exhaust manifolds. Under normal usage, can engine compartment and exhaust temps reach 250+?
Yeah I think your underhood temps. could get to 250* , I'm running headers and the the underhood temperature get pretty warm in stoplight to stoplight action.
Headers themselves can get up to 1200 F . Removing that rollon liner could be quite a mess if it dident work out.
Check out Zyletol or Zyletone paint, it's the splatter paint used in beds, boats and the like. It's very durable, you an get a white with black and grey flecks that looks like granite. I did a jeep engine compartment once with it, it looked great. If you use it, you can spray a clear epoxy over the top that makes it shiney and it will stand up to everything with the epoxy top coat, even brake fluid.
I have a 75 F-250 ,modified 390,i also am running headers, and i've sprayed (splatter )under my hood, firewall, fender wells, also all under the truck, regular under seal, i've used a inferred gun to check the header temp. under 500 at idle normal running temp.I think you'll be ok I like the clear coat, did it turn out good ?
Yeah, the Epoxy clear overcoat looked great, a nice glossy finish that nothing destroyed.
Wide open throttle is where you'll get your higherst temperature, around 1200 on the pyro meter with a supercharger. But then again, hopefully you have alot of air flow happening at wot too!
