Ok I saw a 68 Ranchero today at the salvage yard and it had a 9" rear end. I was wondering why if it is almost an exact match for the 57 - 72 F-100 it is not the second favorite instead of the one in the sticky. I also found a 64 F-100 and a 71 F100 9" Rearend. What rearend came in the 55 and 56 F-100. One last question. My new shop manual mentions a Light Duty 5 sp OD transmission that was available for these trucks. Do any of you know which one it is talking about. Ed
There rear end that came in the 55-56 are a Dana 44 most likely with 3.92 gears. The 5 speed OD is a New Process. It was only in the F-500-700. I'm hoping to find one to put in my '51 to cruise on the highway.
So that transmission can be used one a 292 in a 54 Ford and it will be like a normal 5spd? You guys are teaching me well. I may get to keep my y-block after all. Man I am tearing these guys up at the salvage yards now when it comes to *hevys and Fords. Especially the fords.
It would be more of a 4 spd OD since you would never use first gear since you won't have a huge load in the truck. 1, 2 and R are spur gears so to shift from 3 to 2 you will have to double clutch or you WILL grind gears. It should bolt up. You may have to do something about the larger U-joint mount on the trans. I don't know if a 4 spd U-joint mount would interchange. These trannys come with a trans brake drum for an E-brake.
In the findings on my 60 F100..I have found that someone has installed a Dana 44 in the rear of my truck with 3.73 gears..I will be pulling it out to place a 9" back in....I dont know what year it is but the tag is still on the cover plate so I guess I could get the numbers from it is anyone is interested in it. it is the 5 on 5 1/2 lug pattern
That "someone" could have been the factory. To quote from the sacred text: "Optional on the F-100, is a model 44 Spicer axle. This axle is used on the F-100, when a limited-slip differential is desired."
There was a medium-duty Clark 5 speed with overdrive, model 251VO, according to the 1960 parts catalog. It's probably too rare to be worth considering.
hello, my name is ryan. I could be interested in the rear. But more importantly I would love to talk about your truck. I am a 1st timer, rebuilding a 57 ford I also live in southern oregon. I can't e-mail you directly due to not having 15 posts yet. I would love to run some ideas by you.
