Not a 360? 351/400?

When I bought my '71 F250, the owner said it had a 390. Last night I went out and got the casting number from behind the starter. When I searched that number, a couple postings on the forums said it was a 77 351c. Is that correct? Here are the numbers... D7TE A2B

Confused Bill

The D7TE was a service block for FE's and FT's. You probably do have a 390 that someone built using a service block they bought from Ford.

If I'm not mistaken, the 351C was not availalbe any longer in 1977, and they were not put into trucks...

If your manifold stretches halfway under your valve covers, which I would believe it does, you have an FE engine.

5 bolts on the tapet covers also means it's an FE

If you want to really be sure itza FE, climb under it and look at the oil pan sealing surface, if it is flat, i.e. the pan is flat and does not have main bearing 'cutouts', its a FE.

Very easy to tell. First, the intake manifold, as mentioned before. Second - 335 (Cleveland/M) blocks are the only Ford blocks that the thermostat housing bolts to the block. A thermostat on the manifold rules out a 335 block.

351C was last made in '74.

So have you determined which motor it is?

I'm going to have to go by the casting numbers that I found on that website. Might be a '76-'82 with a dipstick in the front of the block, or a '71-'82 with the dipstick in the oil pan. They also list the head casting numbers on that site too. I can't find what the stroke should be with a 400. I found the bore.

Becasue of the conflicting information, you may want to ID that motor by physical appearance. It would be tough on you to go to the parts store and get items for a 400 if you do have a 360.... Pop the hood and look at the motor. If the top radiator hose goes in the water pump, it's a 400 (see Scroob's info), if the hose goes in the front of the manifold, it's an FE. Then look at the intake manifold, if the valve cover bolts on the carb side go into the manifold, it's and FE.

I didn't see anything on that website that identifies a D7TE block as a 400. In fact, the 351M/400 blocks all had a AE number.

There were no 351M/400 engines in '71 trucks. That's not to say someone didn't put one there later. The "correct" engine for a '71 would have been an FE. What's far more likely is that a remanufactured engine with a later year block was installed.

As I said before, if the thermostat housing is on the manifold, it's not a 400.

I took a look last night. The thermostat housing is not on the intake manifold and the valve covers have 8 bolts holding them down.
Oh yeah, on the back of the aluminum intake manifold it says "Performer 400".

Then it's either a 351M or a 400. Hey, you got one with a good 4V manifold already on it.

There's a ton of stuff you can do to a 400 to really make it scream. Have a look at the 335 engine forum. Good luck.
