I just purchased a '01 XLT 4x4 Expy. Besides the rotary switch pointing to the AWD position how do I tell it is working? Should a AWD mode light up on the dash or something else?
A4WD stands for Automatic 4 Wheel Drive. It runs in 2 wheel drive until rear wheel slippage is detected then the fronts should kick in. The only way I know to test is get in some mud, ice, snow, etc.
You can shift the **** manually in to 4hi at any speed to see if this engages the front wheels.
No lights in A4WD. Essentially, when A4WD is selected, the vehicle drives in 2WD unless the system detects a significant difference in the relative speed between the front wheels and rear wheels. If the rear wheels are rotating at a significantly higher speed than the fronts, the transfer case feeds power to the front differential as necessary to correct the imbalance. Once the front wheels are rotating at essentially the same speed, back to 2WD.
I can throw in another interesting "feature" of the AWD mode. I discovered this during a minor ice storm in January. On this particular road I left it in AWD and we were creeping along at 5 mph or less, the system clunks, bangs, clunks, bangs and gets mighty confused since all 4 wheels were on near zero traction surfaces. Applying the brakes throws it for an even bigger loop
Even at that slow speed the system compares differences in wheel speed that are great enough to engage the front wheels. Annoying as can be but apparently not harmful. I just left in in 4WH
I never thought about that possible scenario. Thanks for sharing!
