I just bought a 1997 f-350 crew cab with a 7.3 deisel in it. I have heard things about the trans in them. This one came with a automatic w/ od. Just wondering if they with stand the deisel good.
The E4OD behind those PSD's have a reputation for being weak when towing heavy loads. Transmission builders blame the torque convertors and servo's for the problem.
A tranny rebuild can cost around 2 grand so have the tranny checked thoroughly.
I have bveen the rebuild route and the cause of the trouble
I believe was in the way I was towing.
I was never told ,(didn't read the manual either) , that when towing to tow in drive only.
so when you are towing kick it out of overdrive and leave it off... it may use a littl emore fuel but the tranny should last a lot longer..
that was just my 2 bits woth...
I don't think the problem was an overdrive issue. I had a 1994 F-Super Duty (450) with the 460 and the auto, it was a bucket truck with an enclosed bed. I ran about 12,000# gross at all time and went through 3 tranny's in 120,000 miles. I don't think the E4OD was ever meant to handle the load of the 250, 350, or higher, hence the new trans in the new SD. Think about it, that was the same trans in the F-150, do you think that Ford put a heavier trans in the 150, or under powered the heavier trucks? :
I have a 97 F350 CC 4x4 with the 7.3 and a E4OD with 4.10 gears. I pull a 7000lb trailer and I pull in OD. The owners manual says to pull in OD. I called the local ford dealer and he agrees with pulling in OD. The local trans shop say to only pull in drive. I called Gale Banks and ask about their trans command and after installing it pulling in OD. I was told that pulling in OD is no problem as long as the trans doesnt start shifting allot. I have 87000 miles on the truck right now with no problems. I run in OD all the time. The truck alone weights 7500lb empty. So that is 14500 lbs running in OD. The manual says I can tow 13400 lbs so the trans must have been made to handle it. I was also told the the 97 E4OD had all the mods to make them stronger over the previous E4OD. I still run the stock cooler and use mercon trans oil.

Dave, the 4R100 is basically the same thing as the E4OD. I think the only changes were to the fluid flow and torque convertor to handle the extra 45ft/lbs gained in the superduty.
Thanks for the info, Pastmaster. I was explained that the new SD trans was a complete redesign due to the problems out of the E4OD in heavier applications. You always learn something new here.
