true dual exahust troubles (possibly engine???)

i have a 1984 f-150 with a 302 and i recently put true dual exhaust on it removed the cats and have two short glass packs (can you say loud) so anyway on my truck because of the fuel tanks they had to run both pipes down both sides then over the axle and then over to the drivers side with the one and this winter when i would start it up cold it would really smoke out of the passenger side and not much out of the drivers side and if you put your hand over the passenger side it would blow your hand away but the drivers side it didnt blow out much there are no leaks and im wondering is it out of timing or something cause it runs great and i just dont understand it i dont know if anyone has had these same problems but its been puzzling me and my friends i just replaced the plugs and wires and it just seems like its only running on one side (the way the exhaust is ) but it runs good and doesnt miss so that couldnt be the case If i had to guess i would think it is timing but im not sure

Can anyone help????

THanks marcus

does it have a crossover? If there is there could be a clog somewhere.

You really need to install a cross-over of some sort. Also, you have to remember that exhaust gas cools(hint: slows down) as it travels down the exhaust pipe. For most purposes, each elbow is an additional 10 feet of pipe. Therefore, if you have 2 more elbows in one side than the other, you have added 20 feet of pipe to that side and the exhaust speed will be much slower on that side. A crossover will help balance the exhaust pressure and help in the scavanging of fresh air on the intake stroke because the other side is in an exhaust mode, it can actually help pull more air in. Crossovers will also help your sound balance out without adding backpressure.

I had same setup on my 86 f150 with dual tanks... same thing with exhaust on one side strong, and the long side weak. That is just the difference in the lengths of pipe as previously suggested, didn't affect the power at all.

On my current 90 f150 I just put a glasspack in place of the stock muffler to get the sound I wanted. Not going to get any great increase in horsepower from duals with stock truck engine anyway, just wanted it to sound better. And it was cheap too! Spent less than $25. total.
