Question C4, C6...or what?

Question...What automatic trans was used behind a 260 V8 in a '64 Comet? Was it a C4, C6, Ford O Matic, or what? I'm considering buying one, and want to know if the tranny will hold a 5.0.

Thanks.

MR

Not sure what it came with, but my guess would be a C4
Crawl under and look at it
There's a thread that shows how to identify them
C4 has a square pan, C6 has a big almost square pan w/ a L cut out of it
Ford-O-Matic Im not sure about

my 64 t-bird has a c-6 w/390, so i would say a c-4 , but i would consider using a newer transmission with the 5.0 engine due to the horse power rating of the 5.0 verses the 260 just a thought.

a C4 can be built to hold a lot of power
If it is a C4.. rebuild it and use it
Nothing wrong w/ them

Right. It is supposed to be stock, but I haven't seen it yet. Just thought it would be cool to make an A/FX clone out of it. May not be interested though, because it's got a lot of rust. Thanks for the answer.

I agree to a point....
If it's totoally not worth saving... I wouldn't give any money for it
because to fix it... wouldn't make it stock anymore, or may not even be fixable.
I see what your saying however... and stock is a good thing

The early 260 and 289's had a 5 bolt bellhousing and the later small blocks ad 6 bolt bell housings.

Stock was probably a ford o matic. A c-4 will hold a 5.0 thats stack but if you pump up the power to it you will need to put a full kit in the c-4 or go with a c-6. The c-4 will not take very much abuse or hard driving.

Not to be a jerk, but I dont get where you guys say "a c4 wont hold a 5.0"
I've seen C4's hold all sorts of power 500+horsepower. My buddies dad has close to 700 horsepower out of his 302 and he runs a C4 and has only tore a few of them up in the 12 years hes been racing.

We rebuilt it with new seals/clutches
and put a manual valve body in it.
He didn't run the manual valve body until about 3 years ago however
