97 check engine light

I am about to purchase a 97 F150 stepside 4.7 engine. The only drawback is the check engine light stays on. Owner says its the oxegen sensor How hard is it to replace? Is it somthing I can do myself or does it need a mech. It has 110000 miles and he wants 7k for the truck it looks brand new. If I can resolve this engine light thing I want to buy it. Thanks in advance for advice and opinions.

I assume you meant a 4.6L engine. I have a 4.2 and the O2 sensors look pretty accessable on it. The right way to do it is with a special socket made for the purpose, but it can be done without.

The first thing you need to do is ask the owner to go with you to Autozone had have the codes read for free, to verify it's an O2 sensor problem. The code should tell you which paticular sensor it is also.

AegisSailor is right. Here's the thing. The codes are a start. I checked off down
the code list as they came up one by one. I replaced my egr, different code came up.
You must clean your egr ports on throttle body as well,
they get clogged with carbon. Did that, different code came up, saying the
driver side bank was running lean, and pointed to a bad O2 sensor.
I replaced the IAC, code went away and never came back. You will find reference
after reference to the bad egr valve and clogged egr ports.
Runs like a bat out of hell now! Oh yeah, cleaning the IAC and EGR valve
doesn't work, just replace them. Don't forget about the ports, it's worth
the time and effort. You have to take the throttle body off to do it. Good luck.
