hard shifting tranny
My 89' F-350 diesel developed a hard shifting pattern. When the automatic transmission goes into 2nd gear it hits hard. Almost feels like somebody rear ends me it hits so hard. Going into third is almost smooth. Fourth is normal. If I accelerate hard it shifts normally, quick and smooth. But a slow smooth acceleration from a standing start causes it to slam into second. I was told by one individual it may be the throttle position sensor. Another told me it may be the torque convertor. Any suggestions? Thanks for your response.

The injection pump has a vacuum modulator switch on the aft end of the throttle shaft that is out of adjustment or malfunctioning, or it could have one of the vacuum lines leaking (check that first). It is a pain in the **** to get right and very sensitive, so unless you've got a Ford service manual, your best bet would be to take it to Ford and let them fix it before you damage your transmission (don't let them give you any crap about the transmission -- it is obvious from your discription that the vacuum modulator switch is malfunctioning).
