Traded my '03 Expy FX4 for a '04 EB Expy. When I was there the salesman showed me a 'New' 04 EB. Had all the options I wanted but something about it made me nervous. All the plastic was off and all the stickers were off the windows. The build sheet actually the sticker with the options list and price was on the seat. I asked to the keys and looked at the odometer. There was 35 miles on the clock.
They tried to push me into purchasing the truck and said it was brand new but I didn't get the feeling that it was. After some discussion, the saleman finally admitted that the truck was sold and said that the customer that purchased it, drove off the lot and his finacing did not go thru so he had to return it.
My question is at this point wouldn't it be considered a used car? Obviously they must have put some lien holder's name on the title at that point or something since all the paperwork went thru except the bank said no. I couldn't believe that they could legally sell that truck as new and that they had the audacity to try to hide that from me.
It's unfortunate that I bought my new truck from them but at that point I was pretty fed up with the buying process and they had another brand new (with everything attached) truck that had the options I wanted. Too bad I didn't see this offer before otherwise I certainly would have made the trip to NY and saved some money.
When we got my wifes explorer the salesman said take it home tonight and we will do the paperwork tomorrow. We did leave the trade, so they had collateral. If our loan didn't go through they would have gotten it back with a few miles on it and i guess it would still be sold as new. Maybe something like that happened with it.
Some dealers do what they call "spot" deliveries, where they let the customer take the vehicle even before the financing is approved. When the bank says "no," the customer has to return the vehicle. It happens a lot, and the dealer gets the vehicle back before any paperwork has been filed with the state, so it's still a new vehicle.
The only thing that would make me nervous is doing business with someone that would do this in the first place. Spot deliveries are generally done by dealers that are afraid you'll go shopping and find out what a lousy deal you got ("get that truck over the curb before they come out of the ether!"). Unless you've done your research and you know you're getting a good price, I'd shop elsewhere.
