I recently picked up a 81 f150 4wd with a 300, and 4spd,4wd for 700 bucks. it has it's issues and i'm working them as i go but i hate putting gas in it. it takes forever to fill i have to put it in so slow or it spills out. is this a common problem, or is it my problem. I came without a gas cap and i really dont want to drop the tank(19 gallon side) and check for a lost rag down there, but is there anything else i can do?
I replaced the tank on my F150 with a plastic one, I believe it didn't have an opening for a hose that connected high on the filler neck, I assume an air return, and now I get the same problem with it only filling slow. Oh, rust in the tank was causing a drive, jerk, drive, jerk problem... filter on gas tube was clogging then rinsing off with the motion of the gas...
I have the same thing with my truck. I know the previous owner replaced the tank about 2 years ago. When I look in the filler neck, it looks like there is no inner tube in the big hose. Oh well, slow and steady wins the race!
In your filler neck, there is supposed to be a black plastic tube that is wedged in the upper half of the filler neck, above where the gas nozzle fits when you are filling it to let the air out while filling. If it is missing, you get what you are describing.
I know, I swapped the in tank fuel pump and forgot to put it back in and figured it wouldn't hurt anything. After 2 slow fill ups, I yanked the fille rtube out, put it back in and now I can pump full speed again.
Mine was slightly chewed up and I looked all over for a new one and couldn't find it so not sure how you can replace it. Junk yard, dealer item? It is about half an inch in diameter and has that flexible ring stuff on it so it can make the bends like a cheap gas can has. I don't know if a piece of rubber fuel line would work or not. It needs to wedge itself in there so it doesn't fall in teh tank so not sure I would experiment too much. Might be worth the price to get a new one. I was able to drop my fille rtube just by loosening the tank and fighting it out and didn't have to drop the tank all the way down.
Good Luck,
Lee

I bought my 83 brand new, never experienced slow fill-up. I can go full speed on the pump handle. Worst I've had is the angle of the spout is off, it will kick off.
I'd check out that vent tube idea. Keep on truckin'.
