Post About to buy.....

I'm new to this site, but I think that it will provide me with a lot of helpful information in the future. Now to my post:

I'm in the process of buying a 99 F-350 SC LB 7.3 PSD 6-speed. The truck has only 53K one-owner miles on it. Do I really need something that big and powerful?? Like a lot of people whose posts I've read, of course I don't. But it's nice to have if you do. I'm buying it for the fuel economy (good mileage and cheaper fuel), and the fact that I can say that I finally have my nice, big truck. I did a few rough calculations in my head and realized that this diesel, when MPG and $/gal. are concerned, has about the same yearly fuel cost of a Ranger, and can do a lot more. Plus I'm a big guy and like to have the spaciousness offered by big trucks. Plus, I don't usually trust a gas engine to last more than 150K (I know a lot last longer, but that's all I would trust it to.), and this diesel's got over 200K left. For about the same price. I think I'm going the right direction, but I'd like to know what other people think about this, and if there are certain things (hidden, unforeseen problems, things to be careful of) that I should know about before I sign any papers.

Thanks to anyone who can help me.

I have to warn you, you may never want to own a gas powered truck again! You may also acquire wrinkle lines in your face from the permasmile!

Enjoy and check out the 7.3 PSD forum.

I know......

I know what you mean. I've driven this thing twice now. A 10 Mile test drive the first time, then an hour-long (aka, about 60 miles) test drive today to show somebody. When I got there, it took everything I had to keep from grinning from ear to ear. It's SOOOOO much better than my current truck (76 Chevy C-10). I've always loved diesels and wanted one ever since I got my license. Now I might finally be getting my wish. Plus the fact that diesel is at least $.10/gal. cheaper where I live. Sure, you may have to drive a couple extra miles to get diesel fuel, but I think it's worth it (not to mention the grin on your face as you drive those extra few miles). Anyway, if you've got anymore information for me, feel free to keep posting or to email me.

Also, since I need the MPGs, and like as much power as I can get, I'd like to hear about some product suggestions and warnigns that might be floating around. Also, since you can't provide links to companies, email me links to reliable, yet reasonably-priced websites I would be able to purchase these from.

Always looking for more information.......

Maint,is another thing you might want to consider? An oil change is kinda high, with 16 qt's of oil and filter. That could wipe alot of that fuel savings out. Don't get me wrong oil burners are great but they can also be expensive to maintain. Hope this helps and good luck with your new rig.

Yes, you REALLY need something that big and powerful. It's a male thing.

The newer PSD's take 15 quarts, not 16. What extra maintenance? I hear this from a lot of gas owners and still haven't figured out what this extra maintenance is. It costs me $30-35 to change the oil myself. Other than the extra cost for oil changes the only "extra" maintenance is fuel filters ($15 every 10-15K) and coolant additive (not in the new engines and only $5 every $15-20K).

Well seriously the 7.3L is one tough motor. The one you talk about is just getting broken in but much depends on the price too. Having moved from the 7.3L to the 6.0L so far I have no regrets but then again the only reason I moved was due to comfort. I have a pretty long commute to the farm so I wanted something more than the XL I had before.

Don’t let anyone tell you bigger isn’t better.

I dotn know if your financing or paying cash for your truck but, if yoru financing it. Take a look at the New 6.0L diesels. THey are much more powerful. THose really put a grin on your face. Also with all the current rebates it will be a good purchase.

Ya know, I'd love to say I'm getting a new 6.0, but those are at least twice the money, and since I'll be financing, twice the monthly payment. Unfortunately, I just can't go with that much money right now. If I had a lot of money, that's what I would do, but with my budget, I have to stick with the older ones.
