I may be treading on thin ice with this topic but....
I am looking to take some of the ride hieght out of my 68 F100. Maybe just a couple of inches all the way around. I got some major plans for this truck and I want to lower it a little because I plan to run it at the dragstrip. I got a 544 stroker that is going to be wedged between the frame rails. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks
I lowered my rear a little and softened up the harsh ride by pulling a couple of leaves. Up front, I'm tempted to put in 6-cyl springs, but haven't gotten around to it.
You're right about the thin ice. I've seen some pretty warm emails flying around here on that topic.
Not at all! I'm more of the 4x4ing type, but respect the hot rod stuff too and restos. It's all good and as long as it's a Ford. Several cos. offer 2" drop spindles which is a nice way to go from what I can tell. There are a couple classic truck mags that focus on this type of street rod truck you might want to check out. Also, I'm sure one of the vendors supporting this sight can get the drop spindles, I just don't know who since I look for stuff to lift it
My friend with a '72 lower the back of his afew weekends ago. I think he used some sort of blocks. Don't know where he got them, will have to ask. But it lowered the back alot. The fenders are 1" above the tire, I want to say 2" or 3" total drop. The way it sits now it kindof has a redneck rake, the back is an inch lower than the front, he is going to lower the front with some 6cyl springs probably, still hasn't decided. Went to his house while he was lowering it but little did I know he was grounded and I thought his dad was going to shoot me so I didn't hang long.
As long as it's ford, it's all good. However, my question is this. What do you hope to gain? It's an old ford truck, it will always handle like a shopping cart, you're not going to get around that. Dont expect having it lower to help at all. However, if you just like the looks of a lowered truck, then go for it.
I will admit that handling is questionable at best. I was going to install a set of sway bars to help the handling. Also a slightly lowered truck looks good.
I lowered my 69 F250 very effectively and cheaply. I drilled the rivots out of the front spring bracket in the rear leaf springs and moved them forward a little bit and drilled new holes and put bolts in it. which lowered the rear end around 3 inches. I also removed 3 of the springs from each side and put traction bars on to prevent spring wrap. Make sure if you move the spring brackets forward like I did that your pinion angle is not too radical. As for the front, I simply cut about 2 inches off the front springs. Hope this helps.
