'93 exp 4x4low not working
Just bought a 93 Exolorer XLT wit 115k. Push the 4x4 button and the dash lights up "4x4". Put it in neutral and push the 4x4 low button and there is a clicking sound for about three seconds, comming from the back of the truck I think, then the 4x4 light goes off. I think the regular 4x4 is working. Anyone ever hear of this kind of problem? Is it something I can fix myself or is it something best left to the dealer or competant repair shop? Thanks for any help.

1st: When going from 4H to 4L, you must have the transmission in neutral, foot on the brake, and you must be stopped or very nearly stopped (less than 3mph or something like that).
beyond that, the electronic shift can require a little work to keep functional. Shift motor can get dirty and it doesn't shift. Try www.glue.umd.edu/~singletn/exp.html for some discussion.

On my '93 I found the switch on the dash dirty. Cleaned both switches with CRC contact cleaner and they work. They come out the front of the dash. I found it easer to pull the panel with the A/C vent and 4X switch, 3 clips on top and bottom.

Thanks guys! Unfortunately the 4X4 will not work at all now. The closest it came to working was one night I got in and the light next to the switch was on and I never touched the button, no 4X4 on the dash though. The light would not go off. I restarted the truck and the light went off. So I guess under the truck I go=)
