pump or clog

My 2.9 litter ranger, needed the rocker gaskets replaced did it, note the uripream did not work well at all, and after I get it running I will use the factory cork with the metal spacers or what ever they care to call them, but the engine ran great, took it for a 20 min highway run. Parked for 1 hour to shop, when I started the enging it atomaticly began to shake and the oil presure dropped to 1/2, but the proformance and presure went up and down. Is this the charactor of a bad pump or a clog? How do I test for pump or clg?
If a clog how do I get it out? Someone told me to drain the oil and fill with karosine and let it soak, then replace the oil? Is this the best option for a clog or should I just replace the pump and screen and use a flush?
Thanks for any help Jerry ranger9!

It sounds like a clogged screen, the kero might work. i would put a real gauge on it first, the stock ones aren't very good.

I'm not sure why changing the rocker arm gaskets would all of the sudden cause pressure problems. Were you having pressure problems before, or did it happen after you changed the gaskets? Maybe you let some of the old gasket fall into the engine, which is causing a "clog" on the sump pickup. If so, the kerosine will not help. I think we need some more information to troubleshoot this problem. When trying to figure out what is wrong with anything, the first question is "what has changed?" In your case, the gaskets did not work, and you did something different. In other words, if everything was fine until you changed the gaskets; that is the first place to look for the problem. Keep us posted.

Good advice given so far. For the shake, I assume you are talking about a rough idle. I'd visually look for loose/damaged vaccum hoses as well as wiring (loose/bad connection, wire on something and insulation melted, etc). Take note of the condition of the wiring around the oil pressure sending unit. Be thorough in your inspection.

When the problem happened, the oil presure rose and fell from normal to 1/2 normal, and the lifters tappded badly, and the dipstick read full. I have never changed the Ranger Rocker covers befor, and those little metal ring spacers are new to me,Maby one of them with a peice of missing gasket did get caught in the system, I saved all but one little peice, it was wendy when I pulled the old gaskets and though it just blew away because I looked every where and could not see it in the engine area, around the truck or anywhere. I have changed a lot of rocker covers befor and never had any problems, this is why I though it might be the pump, but it does sound like a clog to me too, and I never cleaned a cloged oil system. With so much changing so fast I though there might be something new out there to make the whole job eaiser. Ill soak it then pull the pan. Is ther any way I can get around pulling the distributor to get the pan off and on agan? The manual says to losen motor mounts, pull distributor and raise engine, because welded cross-member.
Thanks for the help Jerry janger9
