Tranny question

I have a 96 F150 4.9 with a E4OD tranny. Now my question it has started to do a strange thing that i never have experienced. With OD off while going through the gears it shifts normal up to and including 3rd. While applying normal pedal at about 50 to 55 miles an hour it feels like the tranny is very lightly shifting and the engine revs higher rpms, but we are still in 3 rd gear. If I keep applying pressure it moves on up in speed and shifts again. It is the strangest thing. the motor sounds like it is reving higher and we are still in the same gear. As a matter of fact this is a used tranny casue I took the original out casue it was doing the same thing and thought the tranny was shot. This used one has bout 80000 miles on it and is in bout 35 days and is now doing this ****. Was wondering is this a for real tranny problem or maybe one of the sensors that control it. Have not checked the computer yet but will tomorrow morning. Can a sensor go bad without kicking a code??
