It was a nice 72 degree day today, had the windows up all day. Jumped in it to go home and rolled them all down. Parked in the driveway and went to work in the garage...after an hour of sitting there, the drivers window exploded!!! It was all the way down in the door!!! I had glass on the roof, but not inside, none in the driveway either.
Anyone had this happen before? It's a first for me.
Never saw a side glass explode just sitting there while rolled down. Check for bullet holes in the door. If its clean take it to the dealer and they should replace it. Wierd things happen now and then. They have had some problems with the wire guided regulators on them, maybe one of the wires snapped and something attached shattered the glass.
If you take it to the dealer they will evaluate it and likely pay for the glass and the regulator. If you fix it on your own you may not get reimbursed. Just an FYI
Dealer never heard of it (big surprise). I had JN Phillips Autoglass out here this afternoon and the tech let me see the problem. The metal tabs that Ford glued to the glass was metal to glass contact on both tabs...it was just a matter of time before it exploded. It won't happen again because the new tabs are well surrounded with adhesive.
The tech said that this was his first window on the newer design, and he's heard of it before, just not with these models. It was mostly in general with the tab design...we looked at both tabs (new and old) and the difference was very noticable...it looked like Ford was really stingy on the adhesive over the remanufactured glass, the new glass had a very liberal coating of adhesive.
