E40D slips and OD out

Hello,

Can someone inform me what the problem is with my '92 F250 automatic transmission?
When engine is warmed up after approx.10 miles it refused to shift in OD, and was rolling freely (no engine brake ) .So i serviced transmission (with BP mercon oil) and changed filter.
After servicing truck drove OK, but 40 miles later OD felt out again and so i continued with OD off but then it begans to slip in third gear too.
Now it seems that only first and second still shifts normal and third slips more and more when oil warms up.
Engine temp stays normal.
What do i have to check first?
Thanks for your help.
Luc

Me Too!

Someone please help this guy, I have a similar problem. Except my transmission doesn't start off in low...it's in second gear...and the tach don't work. Everything is fine once in a while then it just goes bad like there is a short somewhere. I've read on the net that a switch or sensor or selonoid can do this but I haven't been able to nail down which one it is. The dealership in my area couldn't or wouldn't tell me. Mine is a '90 F-250 Deisel with an E40D. Help us please !!

I wish I could help, but I have similar problems. If your tach doesn't work, your sensor on the engine may have gone out. Without the computer knowing the engine speed, this could be upsetting the transmission. I am sure someone else would know more about this. Good luck!

If the ECU is not getting a tach signal it may cause the transmission to "failsafe". You need to monitor data with a scanner to see if the ECU is seeing the tach signal or not.

Loosing OD and slipping in third is a problem. Probably burnt the forward clutches. What did the fluid look like before you changed it? Was it burnt?

I'm still having problems...two places couldn't get a diagnostic scanner to work. The truck "suddenly" started working correctly and continued for five or six days and then shut down again. I replaced the tach sensor($65 down the toilet) but it didn't help. I've checked everything I know but don't know anyone I can trust to take it to...repair shops are almost as bad as politicians. Someone suggested checking all the ground wires...I'm off to do that. Thanks, Eric
