Ok I have done this and I know I can find water with 2 coat hangers. Now can someone tell me what and why it works and why only some people can do it?

Don't know how it works, but worked for a guy once who found a water line (water not running) in a large scale sprinkler system. We had just dug a hole where his map said the line would be and didn't fine it. He took two metal rods, bent into 90 degree angles, and held them so the ends pointed forward and the part he was holding was vertical. He walked slowly across where the line should be and suddenly the rods turned to point left and right of him. He said, "dig here." We did and found the water line. Not sure there was even any water in the line as there was a leak in the sprinkler system.

I have known two well or water whitchers. When I have asked them both they just say "I dunno but it works". We had one guy whitch our new well at the farm and he said there is an underground river here drill here and we did and the well driller couldn't pump it dry and it has never given us any problems. Well worth the $20.00 bucks if you ask me (pun intended). I have heard it has some thing to do with how they react to static electricity. Both of the guys I knew would get zapped all the time by static electricity.

I'm not sure how it works, but my wife's grandfather has found numerous places for people to drill for wells, and hasn't been wrong yet. He says it's hereditary as his father also could do this.
Whitebenz,I think you're right about the static electricity. Did the guys you know where a watch? My wife's grandfather can't, within a day it just stops. We have taken them to repair shops who can't figure out why they won't work. My wife has the same problem with the watches, maybe I'll see if she can find water.

One carried a pocket watch because he couldn't wear a wrist watch. The other never wore a watch, never did ask why though. It would make sense.

Come to think of it I should try it as I have always had a pocket watch because I kill every wrist watch that I put on. (even the Rolex my wife bought me for our 10th ann.)

Harless used to take two old car antennas and run accross the feild nutil they would move, He would then switch to his forked stick.and when he found water he would stop and count how many times the end of the stick would "drop" or "bounce" and each drop was one foot. Of the wells we had witched, only one was off by three feet. It's kind of awsome when you think about it.

I never herd about killing the watch, but now that I think about it I never have wore a watch very long because they always bother me. One of the things I noticed when I was doing it is when I would get over water it felt like the hair on the back of my neck was standing straight out.

My friend is the one that told me about doing it he can't do it but his dad and brother can. When I tried it the coat hangers came around realy hard like they where atracted to magnets. Infact when my wife would pull them back to center and leave go they would slam back to my shoulders. Realy a wierd feeling!!

Hi I am new to this.. but I was just looking around and I think I may know why it works.
Each person has a magnetic/ a electric qualities in there body. And they are attracted to water. With rods in thier hands the rods will cross over where there is water. Or some people can just feel where the water is via feeling pricklly all over ie hair standing on end on arms legs or where ever. And people with these ablities do have problems wearing watchs the magnetic charges in their bodies seems to kill the batteries alot faster. *smile* that is my two cents worth* thank you

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-May-02 AT 02:19 AM (EST)]hmmm, i always assumed this was an old wives' tale but....

do the rods have to be metal? do the ends have to be touching each other? if they were, forming a loop, faraday's law would allow for an electric current to form in the loop if there were a changing magnetic field present. in order for there to exist a magnetic field you'd have to have an electric current, which the ampere-maxwell law says would produce a radially symmetric field. if the water was in a pipe i suppose it could happen, but i have a hard time believing it otherwise. if a current-carrying pipe was buried a person could walk over it and the maximum change in flux would occur when the person strides directly over the pipe. if there were any power lines around you'd never be able to pick up the weak signal from the pipe. maybe there are weak electric currents in the earth's groundwater system? i don't know. that is my lame hypothesis. in order for this to work the person would have to be very, very, very sensitive to electric currents.

if i remember right the stories i was told as a kid used a forked branch (what was that thing called, a divining rod?) i have absolutely no idea why this would work.

oops, the field is radially symmetric with respect to magnitude, but curls around the current according to the right-hand rule. that doesn't affect the idea.

I believe flowing fluid generates a weak magnetic field, but in many cases it appears these folks are only finding static groundwater. Given that our bodies are something like 97% water, I would think our own mass would overpower any physical influence of the ground water. Also the mass of the soil/rock above the water. I suspect this one is in the relm of the supernatural.

I have no idea HOW it works. I had always believed it to be "an old wives tale", until I bought some property and needed a well. I first had one guy come in and witch for water, and pick the two most likely spots. I marked the spots with a little piece of paper under an inconspicuous rock each. There were rocks all over the place, since this property was a corn field prior to me buying it. I then had the guy who was to dig the well come in and witch. He didn't even know anything about the first guy. To my amazement, the two best place for a well he witched were within a foot of the first guys results. What didn't make sense to me, was that the best spot with the best flow of water, was witched to be on top of the only hill on my property. I had my own ideas, since there seemed to be a damp spot at the BOTTOM of the hill. The guy with the backhoe dug in all three places. There was water in my spot, but it could be pumped dry easily. The second best spot also held water, but was rated at about 3 gallons per minute. The spot on top of the hill could not be pumped dry. Hmmmmmm.

Sometimes I think we get too wound up in why instead of "O.K. it works, don't know why, guess it don't matter". If it works, don't mess with it.

I use coat hangers and they work well for me. I am told that if a coat hanger won't work for you try using bent brazing rods (bend into L shape and hold the short end in your hand). You put them in your hand's and hold them firmly keeping your hands tight togther. You can find out if it works for you by going over a water line or some known water under ground.

I am told that the best stick to use as a devining rod is a willow branch. I don't have a willow so i tried just a few other trees and none worked for me.
