I've got a '99 Explorer 4.0 OHV with an apparent oil pressure problem. The gauge stays at zero until the engine starts to warm up. I believe this is either a gauge problem or a sensor problem - it's very clear that the engine's oil pressure is normal otherwise, there is no unusual oil usage (it's always been perfect in this engine), no abnormal noises, etc. In fact, the problem started after the engine was degreased - so I'm suspicious.
I'd like to find the oil pressure sensor and check it. Does anybody know where it's located? What color wire leads to it?
I'm also very curious to hear if anyone has thoughts on this as well. My 99 Explorer has been doing the same thing all winter. I got it in September and it was normal until the colder weather hit and I started to notice that it took 3-5 minutes for the oil pressure gague to jump into place...
I need somebody to tell me where the sensor is on the engine.
The general plan is to hook up a voltage or ohmeter to the sensor and see what it is registering while the engine is cold... if it is more-or-less constant and doesn't spike, then I'll go into the gauge cluster and take the same reading at that end.
But, I'm not at all familiar with the 4.0 engine, so I don't know where to look.
The sensor is only a switch and a gauge a glorified idiot light. A fairly common problem and the sensor is only about $7. Look on front drivers side corner just above the pan flange on an extension post.
