Cool Big Problem!!

Hello. First time on the site as user, but have visited regularly. Newbe to the PSD game. I bought a 99 (acually 98.5 manuf. date 6-98) F250 crew 4x4 with 128k miles 2 months ago. Ran great. No problems. Couple weeks ago it started smoking (white-blue) a lot. At highway speeds the smoke would disappear, but when I stopped at a light the smoke would be back. It would run rough as I accelerated but would then blow out a large cloud of smoke and run fine until next stop. Took it to the shop and scan showed a "unbalanced" #5 cylinder. Dude also said the engine was missing and seemed to be starving for fuel. Compression check of #5 showed 165psi(not sure if psi is correct measure??) #3 also checked and showed around 400psi. Injector on #5 also showed OK. Engine has considerable blow-by (through oil fill opening). Since back from the shop, it has run 10 times worse, blowing blue smoke, idling rough and poor acceleration. Guy at shop hinted and engine was in real bad shape and I needed to take action (overhaul or new engine). What do you think???

If the 165lbs figure is correct, and you have excessive blowby....IMO....go with a reman.

Out of curiousity. Why would he need a remanufactured engine if it's only got one dead cylinder? Wouldn't a bottom end rebuild be less expensive? May not even be anything wrong with the pistons.

Past experience...#5 is usually the first to go due to intake system. Buuf bought the truck used, and probably has no previous owner relationship. Not knowing what the maintainence was like for the first 100,000 miles, I would feel better with a reman.

How much $ would a reman go for as opposed to new?

Obviously one cylinder that is that much lower than the rest has to be addressed. For whatever its worth to you, its better to check into REPAIRING your existing engine first. Might be as simple as a partially bent / elongated valve causing the low compression. However, for me, under no circumstances would I get a rebuilt engine to replace it. Too much valuable metal has been cut out and off critical moving parts, and tolerances too easily exceeded.

If it was me, and an engine was in order, I would first check with some truck wrecking yards and see if I could locate a decent low mileage used engine. If not, then BRAND NEW, not rebuilt. NEVER rebuilt. Remember , it was trashed out badly, for the core to be traded in for them to start rebuilding.

There is a place down in Oklahoma that has been selling Brand New PSD engines, complete with turbo and accessories for about 6 to 7 thousand.
