Air filter ???

Time to replace the OEM air filter on the 02 PSD. Picked up like filter from Ford today for $40. Partsman gave a real sales pitch for the ASI filter set up that will retro fit to the 7.3L for $292. Filter replacement would cost $95. Would like to hear your comments about which route to go. I'm in the country on the farm so this farm truck is in very dusty conditions daily. This truck has 100k on it and I bought it used and it has been well taken care of so want to keep it that way. Is the ASI filter that much better?

Heard alot about the Tymar and K&N filter but kinda get the feeling , these are for the preformance guys. I just want one that will keep the engine from having to inhale all this dust I'm in. Your comments please?

Many articles and opinions on this. Several can do the job effectively, including some self manufactured ones where you buy the large filter, and make a connection with tubing and clamps to your existing intake tubing.

The original equipment filter leaves a lot to be desired, and most will agree that an aftermarket filter is more beneficial to your engines health.

For me, the deciding factor is whether or not you are in warranty on your engine. The Ford AIS will not void your warranty. Others may, and probably will. If warranty is not a concern, many like the Tymar.

The Ford AIS can be bought considerably cheaper. Try here: www.fordpartsnetwork.com

They sell them for $189.00 I read a post awhile back where some place in Colorado, I think, was selling them for $179.00.

Since you are not under warranty I would go with the Tymar. Both the Tymar and AIS use Donaldson filters that filter to 99.8-99.9%. Donaldson has a patent on the filter material that is water resistant. Either one will do well. The reasons I'm suggesting Tymar:

1. You're not under warranty at 100K
2. The Tymar is about $110
3. The replacement filters for the Tymar are as little as $19

You'll be happy with either one and they both filter very well.

I've got the AIS, still under warranty. It does a great job for a stock motor I believe. They Tymar would be the choice for someone chipping. I think johns best point is that the Tymar is cheaper, less than half the cost of the AIS at the start and a third the cost on changes. Of course there is cold air vs. hot air, which is the only thing I question with the Tymar. But honestly as soon as my warranty leaves I will probably chip and clip on a Tymar

TJC,
Had my truck not had 45k more miles left until the warranty is out, I would have went with the Tymar because it's cheaper and basically filters just as much. Due to my warranty, I went with the AIS. I am very pleased with it. Either way you can't go wrong.

I hear you. Mine only has 27000 miles on it , and keeping it in some semblance of warranty compliance is a MAJOR consideration. The Tymar setup sounds like a top of the line accessory. However so does the AIS, both because of filtration, and cooler air intake, whereas the Tymar is grabbing some preheated under-the-hood air. Can't make too much of a difference, though, as too many are tooting its horn.

I just want the BEST air filtration without robbing any power. Of course, adding better breathing and some power is a wishful thing. Did you feel your AIS gave you a performance boost?

TJC,
Yeah I did notice a difference. The turbo spools faster.. just enough to notice the difference. But I know much more air is flowing now. Mileage may have gone up, but I never did anything the old fashioned way to validate that... total miles went divided by gallons to fill = MPG. I accidently addressed you with my reply TJC, sorry I meant to address Trakman. But, seeing how we both did the AIS, I'm glad I hit you up by accident I picked mine up at Ford Parts Network. The AIS seems to be more of a modern design because of it's filter. Whereas the Tymar's filter has been around for some time used in big rigs, but it's a very solid design. It's also hypo aquatic ... or whatever the water resistant smart guy term is. Both of these are probably the most tried and true filters on this site. Either way one can't go wrong

Hydro-phobic is what you're looking for.

The Tymar intake has not been used in big rigs. I did some research though after I bought mine to see what the intended application was for the filter. It was designed for use with the Cummins 5.9 in applications such as motorhome chassis and pavers.

JD,
Thanks for the term fix! Ha, I wasn't even close. What I meant was that I thought the Tymar type filter was used in rigs. Sorry for the bad info.

Well I just placed an order for the AIS kit from Ford Parts Network. Will give it a try and see how I get along with it. Thanks again!

Just my luck!

Just my luck, got a E-Mail back this morning saying they are sold out for now. Probably be some time next week before they ship. You guys that have changed to this unit, is there much work or modifications that need to be done to put this AIS system on? Thanks

Nah, takes about 30-40 minutes. Disconnect batteries, take drivers battery out, unhook intake hose, take whole battery storage/filter assembly out. Replace with AIS assembly and new battery tray. Install filter and trunk, put battery back in. It's really simple, even I did it by myself!

Shouldn't take you more than 45 minutes top to make the switch. It came with very detailed instructions. Basically you'll just need to disconnect the batteries, remove the battery, unhook the sensors, remove the bolts holding the old housing, pull that out, put in the new housing and the piece that runs inside the grille, bolt it up, put in the battery, new battery wrap and reconnect the batteries. The only thing you need to be careful about is when you're attaching the 'ram air' piece that goes inside the grille to the intake housing. If you're not careful you could crack the intake housing.
