instrument cluster question

i was wondering, i have a 77 f100 2 wd 302 and the dash lights do not work. how ever the blinker indicators stay lit up. i reached to take the cluster out to see if i could replace any bulbs or anything and it crumbled in my hands so i put it back. my question is i found an 80's van with a beautiful instrument cluster in it and it looks the same as mine will this cluster plug right into my harness in the 77 or will i have to make some changes. if its just a couple of changes i can handle that. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

I'm not sure. You will have to compare the two very closely. Follow the circuit boards and compare, the differences would be in the circuitry.

Check the size of connectors on both.
There are 2 distinctive differences of clusters.

The Idiot light cluster takes an 14 pin connector
The gauges cluster takes an 18 pin connector.

Now,check for the width of the connectors.

The printed circuit should be very close.

i had thought about maybe using after market gauges and putting them in a custom enclosure in the dash. do you have to run all new wires to the new gauges or can some of the wires that go to the gauges i have hook right up to the after market gauges? just another question to try to figure out what i need to do! i did a search on this forum and the question about the cluster has been asked alot and i did get some information those posts as well. but i did not see anything about hooking up aftermarket gauges. Thanks for the replys i need all the help i can get!
