I spent some more time rebuilding my engine this weekend since it was too darn windy to blast or paint. I have a question regarding the oil rings in my pistons. After checking the gap on all the rings we turned our attention to the spacers of the three piece oil ring sets. The circumference of the spacers was too large so we needed to trim them. The instructions weren't very clear. They basically said don't overlap them so we made sure that didn't happen. The opposite ends of the ring were painted different colors (red and green). The instructions didn't say if this signified anything. Just curious what you engine experts think it might mean and if there's a special way of sizing the spacers. We simply made sure they didn't overlap. Here's the end result:
This is 'do it yourself' info - not expert by any shake of the stick.
When I re-ringed my pistons, I just put the green end against the red end and let it smoosh together when installing them in the block. I didn't cut any off - figured they were made for the particular oversize I was using. You need 3 hands until you get that last keeper ring down in place, but they seem to come together OK. Runs fine too.
That's the best I can do Kev. Would be nice if somebody knows for sure..........
